Lovingkindness
Title: Lovingkindness
Author(s): Susan Salzberg
Publisher: Shambala (2002)
Tradition/Influence(s): Theraveda
Overview of Content: Salzberg discusses the practice of the brahmaviharas and their benefits.
Strengths: Although I will call the book a "long dharma talk", it is very readable; Salzberg completely avoids any psychobabble, and in the "Exercises" section clearly breaks down the canonical practices of lovingkindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity in a manageable way.
Weaknesses:Salzberg does not discuss the concentration states accessible through the four sublime attitudes. Much of the book reads like long dharma talk.
Overall, is it practical, open, straightforward and usable? Yes.
